THINGS TO DO

Brantome

Brantome is an attractive town near the northern edge of the Dordogne department, sometimes known as the Venice of the Dordogne.  The town has a nice mix of medieval and renaissance architecture to admire.  The town is classed as one of the 'les Plux Beaux Detours' in France.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux, hub of the famed wine-growing region, is a port city on the Garonne River in southwestern France.  It's known for its Gothic Cathedrale Saint-Andre, 18th - 19th-Centry mansions and notable art museums such as the 'Musee des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux'.  Public gardens line the curving river quays.

Perigueux

Perigueux also contains an interesting mix of medievel and renaissance in it's centre, with attractive boulevards and streets lined with medievel houses to explore - these are concentrated in the region around the cathedral Saint Front, which also retains its attractive arched cloisters.

Thiviers

Thiviers is a pretty active town that has seemingly remained unchanged with the passing years.  The town falls between the more deeply valleyed lansscape to the north and more gently rolling countryside to the south, and is a good base for exploring this northern part of the Dordogne region.  Thiviers prides itself on its local speciality - Foie gras and the other local products such as walnuts and truffles.  Every Saturday Thiviers has a street market that you can eat local foods, wine and browse through the street sellers stalls.

Sarlat

Sarlat is in the region called 'The Perigord Noir' in the South West of France.  The old town, dating from both medievel and renaissance times is a pleasure to visit, especially during the spring and autumn, or early in the morning.  If you can catch the early morning sunshine on the yellow sandstone buildings, so much the better.

Saint-Jean-de-Cole

Saint-Jean-de-Cole is listed as one of the most beautiful villages of France, it lays about 7km east of Thiviers.  Saint-Jean-de-Cole village is quite small but boasts a castle, a large church, a priory, an unusual shaped stone bridge over a lovely stretch of river, lots of colombage (half-timbered houses) and it once won the prize for 'finest roofs in France'.
